Two childhood friends in Vietnam are suddenly torn apart when Mia leaves without a goodbye. Years later, they reunite in Canada, where Mia offers Mouse a place to stay. But the bond they once shared is tested by the women they’ve become. When an argument finally cracks the tension, the truth behind Mia’s departure comes out, and Mouse learns she was the reason behind it all. This story, told through two intertwined timelines, unravels the mystery behind their separation piece by piece by weaving childhood memories with adult displacement.

Lucid is a poetic, performative, and experimental documentary that explores the common themes and causes of anxiety and stress in today’s young adults, and how they manifest in sleep patterns and dreams, acting as a reflective piece on the rising cases of anxiety and poor mental health in young people today. This documentary will take the audience on a surreal journey reliving our participants’ dreams using experimental filmmaking techniques for our visuals, creative and symbolic recreations of our participants’ dreams and experiences with sleep, an immersive and eclectic soundscape, and an overarching, meditative voice-over narration from our various documentary subjects reflecting on their dreams and sleep.

ANIMAL FACE

Camille leads a mundane, day to day life. She wakes up, eats alone, and attends group therapy in her free time. In these group therapy sessions, she meets Maggie. Maggie is fun, fearless and takes charge. She decides to take Camille under her wing and Camille decides to take a chance on Maggie, when Maggie introduces Camille to her friends. Camille discovers this group’s unique form of coping with trauma; they wear animal masks and make the most of the suburbia they are stuck in by Running at nightfall. As she grows closer to the group, Camille gets her own animal mask and finally finds a place to be herself. But when new secrets start to arise and Maggie’s actions start to become more erratic, Camille feels unsure about her place among her new friends. Camille has to make a difficult decision: turn a blind eye, or risk losing the only friends she has in the world.
Animal Face, a 12 minute drama, explores themes of friendship, navigating grief, emotional dependance, and asks the question: can we help others if we don’t know how to help ourselves?
